Day of hair prep

Getting a Style?

This is for anyone Prepping for ANY hair appointment with Powder Inc.

a note to our brides

On the wedding day we need to stick to a strict timeline to assure everyone is done on time and the day goes smoothly for the bride + groom. The truth is that the one that shows up with a clean blow out is going to have a much better end result than the one that shows up with an uncombed, air dried top knot. PLEASE make sure EVERYONE who is getting hair done, reads through this in its entirety.

how to prep your hair before your appointment

  • Arrive with your hair completely *DRY*. We do not blow dry your hair unless previously discussed. If your hair is not dry, we will not have time to do much more than a blow out and maybe some curls.

  • The night before your appointment we recommend doing a good shampoo (2x do a good scrub to really clean the scalp) You can condition your ends but try to avoid the roots and rinse well.  You know your hair best, if in doubt ask us ahead of time!! If you have products you normally put in before blow drying, then go ahead and still use those. PLEASE avoid using hotel room toiletries. Blow-dry with a paddle or round brush. Dirty hair is not always better. There’s only so much dry shampoo can do and sometimes it ends up worse. Instead of oily flat rooted hair, you have oily flat rooted hair with a dusty residue.

  • Only air dry if you plan on wearing your natural texture/curls/waves. Smoothing out curls takes more time so keep this in mind! (more on this below)

  • Part your hair where you think you’d most likely want it for your style

  •  You can use your regular styling products.

  • Try to leave it down to avoid creases or flatness from a ponytail.

  • Having a clean scalp free of product and oil build up is important. You know your hair best. If you think it's better to wash the day of just make sure to follow all of the other directions above!

Naturally curly or wavy hair?

So the rule for our curly girls is that if you want us to work with your curls then show up with your curls and how you would normally do them (best to also send us a photo ahead of time). If you want us to work against your curls then you need to show up with your hair already blown out.

If you have curls then you know that smoothing them out takes time, time that we don’t have on the day of the wedding if you also want it done in a style as well. We will NOT rip through your beautifully dried curls and attempt to stretch them out into a straighter style. If we flat iron them before curling, then this also takes extra time, plus it flattens the cuticle and doesn’t make for a very nice end result.

We WILL blow you out smooth if you show up with wet hair BUT we won’t have enough time to style them into an up-do,/down do or any other style on top of that. The only way we can do both is if we know in advance and book a double appointment for you. Make sense? If you want a blow out, it’s important that you communicate this with your stylist BEFORE hand so she can pack a blow dryer. With all the supplies we have to take on-site already, we don’t typically carry blow dryers as well since 98% of our clients come with dry hair.

Hair Extensions?

  • Lets be honest, almost every hair style looks better when you have more hair. Period. Whether its an up do or down do, If you want it to look pinterest worthy, there is a good chance you’re going to need extensions (this applies mostly to brides). Clip in extensions are our preferred method. It is best to EMAIL YOUR artist with pictures of yourself with your hair down (front + back) AND your hair inspiration photos so they can advise you on whether or not you should buy extensions prior to your trial run. Your artist can advise you on what length you would need to purchase.

  • If you are local, the biggest selection is available at Mid-K Beauty Supply located at 5408 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Portland OR 97212

Prep is important! The better the prep, the better the end style will be.

getting a blow dry only style?

  • Do a good shampoo prior to your appointment (2x do a good scrub to really clean the scalp) You can condition your ends but try to avoid the roots and rinse well.

  • For best results wash hair as close to your appointment time as possible so you can arrive with wet hair. If this is not possible make sure to comb to prevent tangling and comb your hair in the direction you prefer for it to be styled.
